As the number of COVID-19 cases grow, so do concerns for the homeless community. In an effort to help those in need, the UIC community has come together to join the Unsheltered Chicago Coalition, a collaboration between the city’s top health providers, to brainstorm ways to prevent COVID outbreaks.
Led by Dr. Stockton Mayer, an infectious disease physician at UI Health, the UIC team has found camaraderie in an otherwise stressful situation. Composed of doctors, nurses, health professionals, faculty members, and students, they have been using Hotel One Sixty-Six as a shield center to advocate for and test those who are at high-risk.
Looking to make a positive impact in the community, UIC professionals and students from all over campus have been able to come together to apply their knowledge and expertise, while finding like-minded people who also want to care for and assist the underserved.
“[This project has] brought me a lot of peace, a lot of purpose, and a lot of joy… Everybody I work with is incredible, and it’s really nice to think we’re making a tangible difference.” – May Barakat, UIC College of Medicine Student.
Even if you are young or otherwise healthy, you are at risk and your activities can increase the risk for yourself and others. We all must do our part to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
