September 14, 2024. The first tryout as a newly formed UIC Spirit Team was a powerful step forward in uniting cheer and dance under one vision. Blending the precision of cheer with the rhythm of dance, the process challenged athletes to showcase versatility and energy whilst showing team spirit.
Thursday, October 3, 2024. Practice is a sacred space, a place where growth is intentional, effort is respected, and every voice matters. It’s where athletes meet in the middle, blending unique backgrounds and strengths to build a unified standard rooted in respect, discipline, and teamwork.
October 13, 2024. Community service is one of the core pillars of the Spirit program, reflecting commitment to impact beyond the sidelines.
Basketball season is where spirit shines brightest. Win or lose, Flames fans feel the presence of the Spirit Team. Behind every performance are hours of preparation, from showing up to the Flames Arena hours before game time, to endless sacrifices of nights and weekends alongside balancing academics.
Community engagement with the Joffrey Ballet is a powerful extension of the team’s commitment to the arts and service.
Joy is at the heart of everything the team does, and their coaches make sure of it. Whether in the middle of an intense practice or coming together for a team bonding moment, coaches remind the team to celebrate the journey.
As the season turns, the team enters one of the most demanding yet rewarding times of the year. The intensity of Nationals preparation collides with the final stretch of basketball season.
The team balances dancing at high-stakes games, traveling for tournaments, and simultaneously training for the biggest competition of the year. Practices stretch to 20+ hours a week, split between the gym and the studio, demanding focus, resilience, and balance.
To stay grounded, study halls and academic accountability is prioritized, proving that excellence isn’t just about performance, but also about discipline. This chapter pushes the team to the limits and brings out their best.
The National Dance Alliance (NDA), founded in 1976, is dedicated to promoting dance as an art form while fostering a spirit of competition and excellence.
April 9, 2025. The UIC Spirit Team traveled to compete in Daytona, FL at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Competition.
Final Nationals practices are some of the most intense and meaningful of the season. Upon arrival in Daytona, one of the biggest challenges faced is securing practice space, with priority going to early bid recipients.
National events are 2-day events with prestigious titles, prizes and awards. Teams from all over the region and beyond come to compete for their chance to earn top placements to End-of-Season Championships.
The mission of the National Dance Alliance emphasizes the importance of community, skill development, and teamwork, encapsulated in their motto, "The Work Is Worth It." With a focus on tradition and innovation, NDA continues to inspire dancers and coaches alike, making a significant impact on the dance community.
Historically, the UIC program holds national titles, high point accolades and consistency on the national stage. There are huge shoes to fill, and the industry now demands extreme levels of technique and cohesion.
This season, the UIC Spirit Team defied the odds showing resilience, unity, and heart every step of the way.
They brought cheer to the dance floor and represented UIC with pride.
