Each year, the UIC community joins together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by giving back to their communities through acts of service. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event included a variety of in-person and virtual service opportunities, where participants were encouraged to sign up for a project that best suited their health and safety needs.
Characterized as a “day on, not a day off,” UIC Student Leadership and Civic Engagement collaborated with Chicago event and community organizations to create a variety of service projects.
On Monday, January 18, 2021, 189 UIC students, faculty, staff, and alumni volunteered on MLK Day of Service with over 589 volunteer hours achieved.
Students also participated in several virtual service opportunities through Zoom, such as the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community where students contacted Chinatown community members to survey housing status and provide resources. A total of 16 participants made 235 phone calls made to community members.
