The college experience can be challenging, even more so for those from diverse backgrounds. 1702 of the upcoming graduating class are first-generation college students. These students often face unique difficulties not shared by their peers. For example, some may have different financial resources than their classmates, making paying for tuition and books difficult. Others may need help with the language barrier if English is not their first language. Cultural differences may also create a sense of alienation and isolation in the classroom, making it difficult for students to fully participate in the learning process.
It takes tremendous courage and resilience to overcome these obstacles and succeed in college. Those graduating this year have shown their strength and determination to succeed no matter what difficulties they face. Their hard work and dedication to their studies is truly inspiring and should serve as an example to those coming after them.
Graduates of the class of 2023 have much to be proud of. The oldest graduate is 65, while 158 graduates are 30 years old or older. They have earned their degrees and can confidently take the next step in their lives. They should remember to keep their dreams and goals in sight as they progress and strive to impact the world positively.
Student Affairs believes the UIC college experience provides a unique opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive environment. The Class of 2023 has had the chance to form strong friendships and networks that help promote their success through purposeful learning opportunities, innovative programs, supportive services, and welcoming spaces in an inclusive community on campus and in Chicago. While on individual paths of self-discovery, our graduates used their time at UIC to expand their horizons and learn more about the world around them.
632 undergraduate student employees are expected to graduate this semester (150 within Student Affairs), and 36 of our graduating students participated in the Flames Internship Grant program, which included exciting internship opportunities such as the Rohingya Cultural Center of Chicago, Northwestern University Basketball Program, Children’s Legal Center, Cook County Hospitals, Safer Foundation, City of Chicago, Dirksen Federal Building, and Advocate Health Care.
